The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), a consortium of leading technology companies, is currently finalizing the standards for the AV2 video codec, with plans to officially release the specification by the end of 2025.
AOMedia’s membership includes industry giants such as Google, Apple, Amazon, Cisco, Intel, the Mozilla Foundation, Netflix, NVIDIA, Tencent, and Microsoft. Its mission is to develop open media standards spanning video, audio, still images, and immersive technologies.
The alliance has already introduced the AV1 video compression standard and the AVIF image format. The forthcoming AV2 represents a major leap forward from AV1, delivering significantly improved compression efficiency. Beyond higher performance, AV2 enhances support for AR/VR applications, enables multi-program split-screen playback, improves screen content processing, and operates effectively across a much wider range of visual quality.
AOMedia maintains that true innovation can only flourish through openness. Under its royalty-free patent policy, the technologies it develops are made broadly accessible to the industry, enabling companies to adopt them freely and deliver next-generation media experiences to a global audience.
Adoption of AV1 and AVIF has already gained substantial momentum. Surveys show that 88% of AOMedia’s 49 member companies rate AV1 as critical or highly important to their current or future product roadmaps. Furthermore, 53% of members plan to adopt AV2 within 12 months of its release, while 88% expect to implement AV2 support within the next two years.
It is important to note, however, that while AOMedia’s standards are not open source, they are indeed royalty-free. This ensures that most companies and platforms can integrate technologies like AV1 and AVIF without incurring additional licensing costs.
