An increasing number of devices are now beginning to support the Wi-Fi 7 standard, yet its adoption remains relatively gradual. Most users continue to rely on Wi-Fi 5, 6, or 6E protocols, with Wi-Fi 6 already meeting the vast majority of household connectivity needs.
Nevertheless, the Wi-Fi Alliance is actively forging ahead with the development of the Wi-Fi 8 standard, aiming for an official release in 2028. Devices supporting Wi-Fi 8 / IEEE 802.11bn—designed for ultra-reliable performance—may begin certification, and even enter the market, as early as late 2027.
Unlike its predecessors, Wi-Fi 8 does not focus solely on maximizing transmission speeds. Instead, the Wi-Fi Alliance is emphasizing enhanced throughput efficiency and connection reliability. A notable innovation in the draft is Coordinated Spatial Reuse (Co-SR), which intelligently manages the transmit power of multiple mesh access points to mitigate mutual interference.
By leveraging Co-SR, Wi-Fi 8 is expected to significantly improve download performance across household devices by minimizing signal disruption—ensuring that network quality remains robust even in densely populated wireless environments.
Another key feature, Coordinated Beamforming (Co-BF), enables multiple access points to synchronize their transmission patterns. This cooperative strategy helps optimize performance for each connected device, underscoring the Alliance’s ambition to elevate the reliability and fluidity of the Wi-Fi experience.
Given the absence of new frequency bands, the Alliance remains constrained to the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz (effectively 5.9GHz) spectrums. Under such limitations, dramatic improvements in throughput and coverage are unlikely to come from frequency expansion alone.
As a result, future Wi-Fi innovations will hinge on the coordinated operation of multiple access points. The era of relying on a single router’s transmit power to blanket large areas is fading. Instead, the focus now turns to enhancing system stability and collaboration between nodes, ensuring users enjoy a seamless and resilient connectivity experience.
