MediaTek has announced the launch of the Kompanio 540, a processor purpose-built for the education market, promising exceptional performance and groundbreaking battery life for the next generation of Chromebooks. The first devices powered by the new chip are expected to hit the market in January 2026.
The Kompanio 540 features an octa-core architecture with two Arm Cortex-A78 high-performance cores, a dual-core GPU, and support for LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 flash storage. This configuration enables students to switch effortlessly between web browsing, media streaming, and gaming, while maintaining smooth performance even when running demanding applications such as STEM learning tools, Tinkercad 3D design, or Minecraft: Education Edition.
One of the most significant upgrades lies in the processor’s power efficiency — battery life has improved by 35% compared to its predecessor. The chip supports fanless designs, allowing for silent, cool, and lightweight devices that are truly portable and ready for all-day use.
The Kompanio 540 also integrates a high-efficiency video decoder, enabling smooth, power-saving playback of high-resolution streaming content and external display output without excessive energy drain.
John Maletis, Vice President of ChromeOS at Google, remarked:“We’re excited to see the MediaTek Kompanio 540 power more Chromebooks and bring a balance of power and efficiency to more users who can rely on it to bring them a full day of work and play.”
As digital learning becomes the new norm, MediaTek is setting its sights on the rapidly expanding education technology market, offering students a powerful and energy-efficient platform designed to keep pace with their learning needs. The introduction of the Kompanio 540 also underscores MediaTek’s growing ambition to solidify its presence in the mobile computing landscape.
