In 2022, Google introduced an experimental initiative to enable Steam gaming on Chromebooks. However, the company has now announced that, effective January 1, 2026, it will end all technical support for Steam on Chromebook devices.
According to a report by 9to5Google, users attempting to install Steam on newer Chromebooks are now met with the message: “The Steam for Chromebook Beta program will conclude on January 1st, 2026. After this date, games installed as part of the Beta will no longer be available to play on your device. We appreciate your participation in and contribution to learnings from the beta program, which will inform the future of Chromebook gaming.” This indicates that, after several years of testing, Google will conclude its plans to offer Steam gaming on Chromebooks.
The initiative was first announced at GDC 2022 in San Francisco, where Google and Valve jointly revealed that Chromebooks would be able to install Steam, leveraging their capabilities to run a wider selection of games available on the platform. The move even encouraged manufacturers such as ASUS and Acer to release more high-performance Chromebooks.
Yet, from a broader market perspective, high performance has never been the defining characteristic of Chromebooks. While Steam gaming was technically feasible, the range of playable titles remained limited, and the devices struggled to meet the demands of AAA titles.
Furthermore, most gamers still prefer dedicated high-performance laptops for gaming, meaning the target demographic for Steam on Chromebook failed to match expectations. Against this backdrop, Google’s decision to discontinue support seems unsurprising.
Nevertheless, Chromebook users will still be able to enjoy gaming through cloud streaming platforms such as NVIDIA GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming, taking advantage of the device’s always-connected nature. Additionally, given that Chromebooks can still run Android titles, users will continue to have access to a wide selection of games available on the Google Play Store.
