Artificial intelligence systems require content to generate results, yet they have long faced criticism for failing to compensate the writers and editors who create that content. In response, the AI search engine provider Perplexity AI has announced plans to begin paying websites and publishers for their contributions.
The company has introduced a new subscription plan, Comet Plus (unrelated to the Comet browserβs subscription package), priced at $5 per month. Under this model, whenever paying users rely on Perplexity AI to gather content, the company will share revenue with the original data providers.
Subscribers to Perplexity Pro and Perplexity Max automatically receive these benefits at no additional cost. Since they are already paying members, their use of Perplexity AI ensures that the referenced websites are eligible for compensation as well.
Revenue-sharing model:
- Direct access: When a user clicks through from a Perplexity AI search result to a website, that site earns a share of revenue.
- Search citations: If Perplexity AI directly quotes a segment of a websiteβs content in its responses, the publisher is rewarded.
- Agent actions: When Perplexityβs AI agents visit a site on behalf of a user to execute tasks, the site also receives compensation.
It is important to note, however, that not all websites qualify. To benefit, publishers must join Perplexity AIβs Partner Program, which comes with its own requirements. The company is actively seeking reputable and high-quality publishers for collaboration.
Only searches and interactions initiated by paid subscribers generate compensation. Any clicks, citations, or automated visits performed by free users do not qualify for revenue sharing.
Given that the Comet Plus subscription costs just $5 per month, the payout per click or citation is expected to be minimal. Nevertheless, larger publishers and frequently cited websites may see more substantial returns, making this an intriguing shift in how AI platforms interact with and support the broader publishing ecosystem.
