Apple has unveiled a new research report authored by Professor Andrey Fradkin of Boston University’s Questrom School of Business and Dr. Jessica Burley of Analysis Group, revealing that the App Store ecosystem generated an astonishing $1.3 trillion in developer revenues and sales worldwide in 2024. Remarkably, over 90% of this revenue went directly to developers, without requiring any commission to be paid to Apple—highlighting the company’s commitment to fostering a diversified business model.
According to the study, developers earned $131 billion from digital goods and services in 2024, with gaming, video editing, and business tools emerging as key revenue drivers. Meanwhile, income from physical goods and services exceeded $1 trillion, propelled by the surge in demand for online services such as food delivery and grocery logistics.
In-app advertising revenue also rose to $150 billion, underscoring advertising’s continued role as a lifeline for many free applications.
Apple emphasized that this growth trajectory has been evident since 2019, with overall revenues more than doubling over the past five years. Notably, revenue from physical services soared by 2.6 times, underscoring the rapid expansion of mobile commerce. Simultaneously, creator-focused apps—particularly those supporting content production like video editing tools—have experienced steady growth amid the rise of the creator economy.
On the global front, the App Store ecosystems in the United States, China, and Europe all saw their total revenues double over the past five years. In the U.S., mobile payment spending surged more than sevenfold since 2019. In China, online grocery purchases quintupled, while Europe experienced a threefold increase, driven primarily by demand for delivery services. In the Asia-Pacific region, travel apps have become major drivers of consumer spending in markets like Japan and India.
Apple also reiterated its steadfast support for the developer community. Tools such as Xcode and TestFlight, alongside promotional resources like App Analytics and Product Page Optimization, empower developers to build and refine apps more efficiently. Furthermore, Apple has established developer centers and academies worldwide, offering multilingual technical assistance and resources to fuel innovation.
Just ahead of WWDC 2025, Apple’s announcement underscores the App Store’s enduring potential to help developers unlock revenue opportunities. Beyond attracting more creators to its platform, the company clearly aims to reshape public perception by demonstrating how the App Store continues to drive substantial content-based revenue growth.
