During its recent earnings conference, Samsung noted that ongoing uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariff policies, coupled with increasingly stringent export controls on artificial intelligence-related products, may impact the company’s planned product launches in the latter half of the year. These developments could lead to diminished demand and, consequently, lower sales revenue. Additionally, tariffs may drive up the cost of smartphone components, which in turn could affect the pricing and market performance of forthcoming devices.
In the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, Samsung reported record-breaking quarterly revenue of 79.14 trillion Korean won, driven largely by the strong performance of its Galaxy S25 series. However, operating profit stood at 6.7 trillion won, representing a slight decline from the previous quarter’s 6.5 trillion won.
Despite achieving a historic revenue milestone, Samsung acknowledged that the U.S. government’s proposed tariff policies continue to exert considerable pressure. The company’s semiconductor division posted a profit of just 1.1 trillion won — a notable drop from 2.9 trillion won in the same period last year. While several Chinese clients rushed to stockpile memory chips and other components ahead of the new tariff measures, boosting short-term revenue, Samsung anticipates that the forthcoming policies will negatively impact future earnings. The company also warned that tariffs could substantially raise the prices of its upcoming smartphones, televisions, and other consumer electronics in the second half of the year.
As many of Samsung’s products are manufactured in Vietnam and Mexico, shipments to the U.S. are likely to face increased import costs. Furthermore, with the U.S. government expanding its restrictions on AI-powered technologies, Samsung’s high-bandwidth memory (HBM) offerings may also come under intensified regulatory scrutiny.
Looking ahead, Samsung plans to release the Galaxy S25 Edge — a sleek and lightweight smartphone first teased earlier this year. The company is also preparing to unveil the next generation of foldable devices: the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7. Additionally, there are rumors of Samsung debuting its first tri-fold smartphone, although recent reports suggest that the launch may be postponed.
