The Projects feature in ChatGPT, once reserved exclusively for paying subscribers, has now been extended to free users—meaning that all ChatGPT users can now take advantage of it.
Projects allow conversations with the AI to be organized around specific themes. In essence, they function as elegantly structured folders for ChatGPT dialogues, enabling users to sort and manage different types of interactions with clarity and ease.
The feature also supports custom instructions that define how the AI should respond, as well as constraints on what information and files it may reference. For example, work-related and personal conversations can be separated into distinct projects, each with its own preset directives, ensuring tailored responses for different contexts.
With this update, OpenAI has also increased the number of files that can be attached within ChatGPT projects. Free-tier users may now upload up to 5 files, ChatGPT Plus subscribers up to 25 files, and ChatGPT Pro users up to 40 files.
Regardless of plan, all users can personalize projects with custom colors and icons, making it easier to distinguish between categories and quickly access the desired project.
At present, the Projects feature is available on the web and Android versions of ChatGPT, with support for iOS expected to roll out in the coming weeks.
