Anthropic has announced the long-awaited introduction of a memory feature for its Claude AI chatbot—a capability already available in other AI applications such as ChatGPT, making Claude’s adoption comparatively late to the table.
The memory feature enables Claude AI to extract contextual information from past conversations—such as a user’s profession, age, educational background, and preferred communication style—and automatically incorporate this context into future interactions. This eliminates the need for users to repeatedly provide the same background details in order to receive more tailored responses.
Anthropic explains that the new feature ensures Claude will “no longer forget your work.” The chatbot can now remember prior discussions, allowing users to seamlessly continue ongoing projects, reference previous exchanges, and build on earlier ideas—without having to start from scratch each time.
Claude’s memory is available on the web, desktop, and mobile platforms, and it can keep projects and work contexts distinct to prevent overlap between different backgrounds. Users can switch between contexts—for instance, separating work-related conversations from personal ones.
For now, the feature is limited to certain paid subscription tiers, including Claude Max, Claude Team, and Claude Enterprise, with Claude Pro slated to receive support in the future. Free-tier users may face a much longer wait.
Eligible subscribers can enable the feature by navigating to their profile settings, then toggling it on under the “Search and Reference Chat” section. Once activated, Claude AI will automatically retrieve relevant background details from past chats to deliver more contextually aware answers.
Functionally, Claude’s memory differs from ChatGPT’s. Whereas ChatGPT allows users to predefine their background information, Claude infers it directly from prior conversation history—meaning that, in practice, the user experience is likely to diverge in subtle but important ways.
