Shortly after last week’s large-scale AWS outage, Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform also experienced a significant service disruption, affecting a range of products and services including Microsoft 365, Xbox, and Minecraft.
The incident peaked around 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on October 29, when Azure’s official Service Status page reported that Microsoft had detected a widespread technical issue at approximately the same time.
In a status update released at 3:57 p.m. ET, Microsoft announced that it had begun deploying the “last known good configuration” and confirmed that customers were starting to see early signs of recovery.
The company explained that it was actively rerouting traffic to healthy nodes and anticipated that Azure services would be fully restored by 6:20 p.m. ET.
At the height of the disruption, users on Reddit reported that Xbox consoles were unable to load Game Pass, while others experienced limited access to Microsoft 365 productivity and enterprise applications. The outage also appeared to impact Microsoft’s technical support site and even some airline websites.
A Microsoft spokesperson later issued a statement, saying:
“We are working diligently to resolve the issue affecting Azure Front Door, which is impacting the availability of certain services. Customers should continue to monitor their service health notifications. The latest updates regarding this issue are available on the Azure Service Status page.”
Although the scale and duration of this Azure disruption appear less severe than last week’s major AWS outage, the incident once again underscores the risks of relying solely on a single cloud infrastructure, highlighting the potential for significant service interruptions and economic losses when redundancy is lacking.
