Around 12:30 PM GMT on November 18, numerous users reported that a multitude of major global websites, including the social media platform X and the ChatGPT service, had become inaccessible.
According to Tom’s Guide, the likely source of the disruption was a server incident at the network services provider Cloudflare.
Cloudflare officially acknowledged that they were experiencing a severe server issue, which had triggered widespread service interruptions across a host of popular platforms and websites.
Windows Central disclosed that the current technical anomaly coincided precisely with the scheduled maintenance for the SCL (Santiago) data center.
The social media network X and OpenAI’s ChatGPT system were significantly affected and could not be reached. Several other platforms, such as Canva, PayPal, and Uber, also encountered service disruptions for some of their features.
“The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented. We have made changes that have allowed Cloudflare Access and WARP to recover. Error levels for Access and WARP users have returned to pre-incident rates. We have re-enabled WARP access in London. ” Cloudflare stated in their most recent official announcement.
On its official website, Cloudflare highlights that the company processes Internet requests for millions of websites and manages an average of 78 million HTTP requests every second. Consequently, it is hardly surprising that when Cloudflare encounters an outage, the wider Internet ecosystem suffers a simultaneous failure.
