Following OpenAI’s release of GPT-5, Microsoft is now actively working to integrate the model into its own products. Among the first to receive support is Microsoft Visual Studio Code, which has been updated to include GPT-5 integration.
Visual Studio Code offers AI-powered coding capabilities through GitHub Copilot, and GPT-5 support is currently in the public preview phase, where the model is labeled GPT-5 (Preview). This feature is, for now, limited to paid GitHub Copilot subscribers.
According to GitHub, GPT-5 is OpenAI’s most advanced model to date, delivering significant improvements over previous versions in reasoning, code quality, and user experience. It excels at handling complex, end-to-end coding tasks, minimizing the need for extensive prompting. GPT-5 also introduces enhanced Agent capabilities, positioning it as a true collaborative coding partner and intelligent assistant for all users.
Starting today, GPT-5 will be rolled out progressively to all paid GitHub Copilot subscribers. Developers can select the GPT-5 model from the chat model picker within Visual Studio Code; if it is not yet visible, it simply means the rollout has not reached them, and access may require some patience.
For GitHub Copilot Enterprise, IT administrators must explicitly enable the new GPT-5 policy in Copilot settings before their organization’s subscribers will be able to select GPT-5 in the Visual Studio Code model picker.
