OpenAI has officially announced that it will hold a launch event on August 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Although GPT-5 is not explicitly mentioned in the announcement, the promotional materials strongly suggest that the highly anticipated GPT-5 series models will take center stage.
Interestingly, a number of details about GPT-5 have already surfaced due to an early leak on GitHub. In a now-deleted blog post, GitHub confirmed that the GPT-5 models will be accessible via the GitHub Models platform.
The blog post also revealed that GPT-5 will be released in several distinct versions tailored to specific use cases:
- GPT-5: Designed for tasks requiring logical reasoning and multi-step problem-solving.
- GPT-5 Mini: A lightweight version optimized for cost-sensitive applications, offering lower operational costs.
- GPT-5 Nano: Specially tuned for rapid responsiveness, ideal for low-latency environments.
- GPT-5 Chat: Crafted for enterprise-grade applications, this version delivers advanced, natural, multimodal, and context-aware conversational capabilities.
Following the official release, the GitHub Models platform will support the use of GPT-5, allowing developers to explore its capabilities through the GitHub Models Playground or programmatically via the GitHub API.
For everyday users, GPT-5 will be made available through ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. Initially, access may be limited to subscribers, though a quota-based free tier is expected to follow.
According to OpenAI’s previous roadmap, ChatGPT users will not be required to manually select a model version. Instead, OpenAI will dynamically allocate model access based on subscription tiers. For instance, free users may be offered the standard intelligence tier of GPT-5, while ChatGPT Plus subscribers will receive access to a more capable version. ChatGPT Pro users, in turn, will benefit from the most advanced intelligence level available in the GPT-5 lineup.
