CVE-2024-4041: Security Flaw Found in Popular Yoast SEO Plugin – Update Immediately!
A security vulnerability has been discovered in Yoast SEO, the most popular search engine optimization plugin for WordPress, affecting over 5 million active installations worldwide. Identified as CVE-2024-4041 with a Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) score of 6.1, this reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue poses a serious threat to website integrity and administrator control.
Details of the Vulnerability
The CVE-2024-4041 vulnerability stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping mechanisms within the plugin, particularly in the way URLs are handled. The flaw is localized in the add_premium_link() function of the WPSEO_Admin_Bar_Menu class, which adds a promotional link to the WordPress admin bar. The critical issue arises in the build_shortlink() function within the WPSEO_Shortlinker class, where the escape function fails to sanitize user input correctly.
This security gap allows unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages, which execute when triggered by user interactions such as clicking on a link. The malicious script could potentially enable the attacker to create new admin users, inject backdoors, or redirect visitors to harmful websites.
The vulnerability was reported by researcher Bassem Essam, who was awarded a bounty of $563 for his discovery.
