Ahead of IFA 2025, Dolby Laboratories has unveiled its latest imaging standard, Dolby Vision 2, which it touts as the next evolutionary leap beyond existing HDR specifications. With a more powerful image-processing engine and intelligent enhancement tools, Dolby Vision 2 promises picture quality that not only delivers HDR, but surpasses it, offering a visual experience that feels βbeyond HDR.β The first wave of support will be led by Hisense, alongside a partnership with the French streaming platform Canal+, to drive broader content adoption.
At the heart of Dolby Vision 2 lies the Content Intelligence system, which leverages AI to dynamically optimize display output. It takes into account not only the video itself, but also ambient lighting conditions and scene characteristics to deliver the most refined presentation.
For example, Precision Black preserves intricate details in dark sequences, while Light Sense adapts brightness to the surrounding environment, preventing images from appearing too dim or washed out. For fast-moving content such as live sports and gaming, Dolby Vision 2 introduces specialized modesβSports and Gaming Optimizationβenhancing motion clarity, white-point calibration, and overall immersion.
The new standard also introduces Bi-directional Tone Mapping, enabling high-end televisions to achieve superior brightness, sharper contrast, and richer colors while maintaining the creatorβs intended artistic vision. Meanwhile, Authentic Motion, the worldβs first creator-guided motion control system, ensures that film and series playback mirrors the authentic feel of the cinema.
Dolby Vision 2 will be offered in two tiers: Dolby Vision 2 Max, designed for flagship TVs to fully harness advanced hardware capabilities, and a standard edition, which brings the benefits of the new image engine and Content Intelligence to mainstream models.
Hisense will become the first television brand to integrate Dolby Vision 2, debuting it in its premium RGB-MiniLED panels. In parallel, Canal+ will begin delivering movies, series, and live sports in Dolby Vision 2, accelerating ecosystem growth across content and devices.
As anticipation builds for CES 2026, the industry expects more brands to showcase Dolby Vision 2 in action, alongside new creator-focused applications. For the television sector, Dolby Vision 2 represents not merely an upgrade in picture quality, but a defining milestone in the reinvention of the home cinema experience.
