As Apple is expected to unveil its next-generation operating systems at WWDC 2025—with speculation suggesting a unified version number “26” symbolizing the year 2026—Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has revealed that the company is introducing a new “Liquid Glass” design in preparation for a commemorative iPhone model marking the 20th anniversary of the device’s debut in 2027. Internally codenamed Glasswing, the upcoming iPhone is said to feature an all-glass body.
The Glasswing codename is inspired by a butterfly species known for its transparent wings, scientifically named Greta oto. The name alludes to the device’s design—a seamless glass enclosure with curved edges, ultra-slim bezels, and the complete elimination of screen notches or cutouts, aiming to deliver a truly immersive full-screen experience.
The operating systems to be introduced at WWDC 2025 are anticipated to adopt the “Liquid Glass” aesthetic across the board, aligning with the design language introduced in visionOS on the Vision Pro. This shift seeks to unify the user experience across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS, thereby enhancing cross-device interaction and continuity.
However, some industry perspectives suggest that Apple’s progress in artificial intelligence has been sluggish. Even the reimagined Siri showcased at WWDC 2024 has yet to be integrated into iOS, and internal sources have indicated that Apple’s insistence on building the new Siri using legacy code has encountered significant hurdles. Moreover, the project is reportedly operating under limited budget constraints—an approach that stands in stark contrast to OpenAI’s ground-up development of ChatGPT, which has benefited from robust and sustained investment.
As OpenAI continues to captivate the market with its groundbreaking generative AI technologies, and Google rapidly catches up in the span of a single year, concerns have grown that Apple may struggle to remain competitive in the AI space. Consequently, expectations for WWDC 2025 have shifted: rather than dazzling advancements in artificial intelligence, the spotlight is likely to fall on refinements to system functionalities. It is also speculated that the event may lack the hardware excitement of 2023’s Vision Pro debut—though some believe Apple could tease early plans for its upcoming smart glasses or other next-generation hardware initiatives.
WWDC 2025 is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time on June 9, with the keynote expected to unveil detailed updates across Apple’s suite of operating systems, including iOS 26, macOS 26, iPadOS 26, and watchOS 26.
