In his “Power On” column, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reported that some Apple employees have expressed a sense of pessimism regarding the company’s progress in artificial intelligence development, and believe Apple’s competitive positioning in the AI race—particularly against firms like OpenAI and Google—remains limited.
While Apple unveiled the Vision Pro during WWDC 2023 and introduced its “Apple Intelligence” technology at WWDC 2024, Gurman predicts that the announcements at this year’s WWDC 2025 will be relatively modest in comparison.
Following Google’s showcase of its expansive Gemini AI capabilities at Google I/O 2025—including the ability to generate complete voiced videos from text prompts—many within Apple reportedly feel that the company is lagging in its advancement of AI technologies. This perceived sluggishness has raised concerns internally that Apple’s innovative reputation could soon come under scrutiny.
Current information suggests that the upcoming iOS 19 will adopt a unified version naming scheme across Apple’s operating systems, aligning as iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, and watchOS 26, thereby simplifying version recognition between newer and older software iterations.
The user interface design is also expected to draw inspiration from visionOS, incorporating numerous circular icons and translucent visual elements, with the goal of making cross-platform interaction more seamless and intuitive. Additional updates may include a comprehensive redesign of Game Center, potentially spurred by Apple’s acquisition of RAC7—the developer behind the popular Apple Arcade title Sneaky Sasquatch—marking Apple’s first known purchase of a game development studio.
Other anticipated developments include the public rollout of the revamped Siri, integrated with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and whether Apple can maintain competitive momentum in the multilingual AI application landscape.
WWDC 2025 is scheduled to take place from June 9 to 13, Pacific Time. As with previous years, the event will be held virtually, with in-person attendance limited to invited developers and winners of the student developer challenge.
