In November, 2020, Apple officially released macOS 11 Big Sur. As of this coming November, the version will have reached its five-year mark—a considerable lifespan for an operating system.
Now, the gaming platform Steam has announced that it will formally end support for macOS 11 on October 15, 2025. To continue receiving security and feature updates, users must upgrade to a more recent version of macOS.
The reason behind this discontinuation is straightforward: Google Chrome will also cease supporting macOS 11. But what does that have to do with Steam? Steam integrates Chromium to deliver its services to users.
Once Chromium discontinues support for macOS 11, Google will stop providing security updates, rendering Steam vulnerable if it continues to run on this system. In light of these security concerns, Steam has opted to proactively drop support for macOS 11, urging users to upgrade to newer versions of the operating system.
According to Steam’s platform statistics, players still using macOS 11 constitute a mere 1.88% of the overall macOS user base. The most popular versions among gamers are macOS 12 and macOS 15, which users are encouraged to adopt.
Of course, newer macOS versions come with specific hardware requirements. For those whose Mac hardware supports only up to macOS 11, upgrading the operating system is no longer an option—leaving the purchase of a newer device as the only viable solution.
