Previously available exclusively to U.S.-based users subscribed to the Google One AI Premium plan, Google’s “AI Mode” search feature is now open for broader testing through the Search Labs initiative—though access remains limited to users within the United States with their language settings configured to English.
“AI Mode” resembles an interactive experience with a chatbot, offering enhanced access to online information. It is widely seen as Google’s strategic response to competing AI-powered services offered by companies such as OpenAI.
Powered by a customized Gemini AI model, Google also announced that “AI Overviews”—the engine driving AI-generated summaries—has been upgraded to use Gemini 2.0, promising faster search responses and greater accuracy in summarizing content. Future iterations may see further upgrades to Gemini 2.5 or newer versions.
The operational model of “AI Mode” is reminiscent of the previously introduced “Deep Research” tool. However, unlike Deep Research, which requires detailed user input, AI Mode emphasizes keyword-driven queries. It also operates with a narrower search scope and shorter execution times, aiming to deliver quicker, more immediate search results.
In addition, users can now access “AI Mode” through a multimodal interface. For example, integration with Google Lens allows users to capture images via their smartphone cameras and upload them for contextual AI-powered analysis. The system can respond to visual-based inquiries, providing users with enriched, real-time information extracted directly from images—further enhancing everyday utility.
