Revamped "Start" Menu Interface
JScript, a dynamic scripting language developed by Microsoft and compatible with JavaScript, has been embedded within Windows since the era of Internet Explorer 3.0. Developers have long utilized this engine to execute their own applications.
Although Microsoft officially deprecated JScript several years ago, the engine remains present in Windows 11. Due to its outdated architecture, JScript poses potential security risksβprompting Microsoft to introduce an enhanced version.
This refined version, named JScript9Legacy, is an Active Scripting engine introduced in Windows 11 version 24H2. It is built upon the Chakra engine from Internet Explorer 9. While Internet Explorer has been rendered largely obsolete in Windows 11, certain enterprise environments and specialized use cases still require JScript support. Consequently, rather than eliminating JScript entirely, Microsoft has opted to release an improved variant to maintain critical compatibility.
Microsoft recently announced that JScript9Legacy will be enabled by default in Windows 11 24H2. Built on the JScript9 foundation, the new engine offers enhanced performance and fortified security, while adhering to the original JScript engineβs standardsβensuring robust backward compatibility.
JScript9Legacy is designed to help script developers mitigate the risks associated with cross-site scripting (XSS) and other web-based attacks. With improved JavaScript object handling and stricter execution policies, malicious scripts will find it significantly more difficult to exploit vulnerabilities to gain control over Windows systems.
Importantly, since support continues, Microsoft has committed to delivering monthly security updates addressing XSS and other script-based threats. Enterprises can therefore confidently continue using JScript for their specialized scripting needs.
Lastly, Microsoft anticipates that transitioning from the legacy engine to JScript9Legacy will not result in compatibility issues. All JScript tasks will now be executed by jscript9legacy.dll, ensuring seamless continuity for existing workflows. Nonetheless, Microsoft has acknowledged the potential for unforeseen issues and has provided a rollback option to revert to the original JScript engine if necessary.
