Originally announced in 2021 as Project Starline—Google’s initiative to enable truly lifelike, face-to-face interaction with distant loved ones—the project has since evolved. At Google I/O 2025, the company revealed its official name: Google Beam. In collaboration with HP, Google plans to introduce this technology into enterprise environments, with HP set to offer it to select clients later this year.
Compared to its original 2021 prototype, which required substantial physical space, the refined version of Google Beam is significantly more compact. It now operates with a single display and fewer cameras, requiring only a small meeting booth to set up. This streamlined design makes it far more adaptable to typical corporate and commercial environments.
With Google Beam, the collaboration with HP continues. The system uses a total of six cameras positioned above and on either side of the screen to capture the user’s presence. Advanced AI and Google Cloud’s computational capabilities work together to render a hyper-realistic 3D representation of the speaker on the recipient’s screen—an image so vivid it appears as though the person were physically present. The display dynamically adjusts lighting and perspective based on the viewer’s angle, enhancing the sense of realism.
Initially, Google Beam will be offered in the U.S. to select enterprise clients including Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, Hackensack Meridian Health, Duolingo, and Recruit. Moving forward, Google will also partner with Zoom and solutions providers such as Diversified and AVI-SPL to bring Beam to a broader global audience of businesses and organizations.
