Google has officially announced that its generative AI assistant, Gemini, will be fully integrated into the Google TV platform, debuting first on the TCL QM9K series before expanding to a wider range of smart TVs later this year. This update not only preserves the existing voice-control features of Google Assistant but also elevates the experience with natural language interaction and intelligent content recommendations, transforming the television from a mere playback screen into a true AI-powered hub of the living room.
While Google Assistant already supported commands such as playing shows or controlling lights, the integration of Gemini brings the experience to a conversational level.
For instance, a user could say: “Recommend a movie my wife and I would both enjoy — she loves comedies, and I prefer dramas.” Gemini will curate a tailored list with brief descriptions. Even if the viewer remembers only fragments of a recent medical drama, Gemini can identify the title and provide a concise recap, ensuring a smoother viewing experience.
According to Google, the fusion of Gemini and Google TV transforms the platform into a multifunctional ecosystem that blends entertainment, learning, and daily life. Leveraging multimodal AI, parents could ask the TV: “Explain why volcanoes erupt at a third-grade level.” The AI would deliver a simple, age-appropriate explanation, recommend related YouTube tutorials, and even guide a hands-on activity like building a volcano model — turning the TV into a family learning companion.
Gemini can also help with everyday needs, from suggesting dessert recipes that can be made in under an hour to offering beginner guitar lessons. By taking advantage of the large-screen format, Google TV extends its relevance beyond entertainment into practical, day-to-day scenarios.
Beyond the TCL QM9K, Google confirmed upcoming support for the Google TV Streamer, Walmart onn. 4K Pro, the 2025 Hisense U7/U8/UX models, and TCL’s QM7K, QM8K, and X11K series, with phased rollouts planned throughout the year.
Gemini’s arrival on Google TV is also widely viewed as a direct response to CES 2025, where Samsung and LG announced the integration of Microsoft Copilot into their latest television offerings.
As generative AI continues its rapid ascent, the smart TV market has emerged as a new battleground for tech giants. Through Gemini’s deep integration, Google not only reinforces Android TV’s dominance in the smart TV ecosystem but also strengthens its strategy in voice assistance and home AI orchestration, vying to make the television the primary gateway for daily user interaction in the living room.
