As AI tools continue to permeate the educational landscape, Google has unveiled a new “Guided Learning” mode for its Gemini model—an interactive learning framework designed to help students comprehend subject matter rather than merely deliver answers. Simultaneously, Google is offering university students in select markets a complimentary one-year subscription to Google AI Pro, further advancing the adoption of AI-powered educational tools.
This newly introduced Guided Learning feature marks a pivotal step in Google’s vision of positioning Gemini as a robust learning companion. Echoing the educational capabilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, Guided Learning emphasizes fostering deeper understanding rather than limiting interaction to basic question-and-answer exchanges.
When this feature is enabled, Gemini engages users in a more conversational and exploratory manner—breaking down problems, offering step-by-step explanations, assessing comprehension through follow-up queries, and integrating visual aids to enrich the learning experience.
Built upon Google’s LearnLM model—an AI system fine-tuned specifically for educational purposes and grounded in pedagogical research—Guided Learning will gradually appear within Gemini’s prompt interface as a toggleable option, allowing users to activate it as needed.
In addition to this launch, Google announced that it will offer a year of complimentary Google AI Pro subscriptions (formerly known as Google One AI Premium) to university students in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and Brazil. This initiative grants full access to Gemini’s integrations within Google Workspace, the NotebookLM tool, the Gemini Pro 2.5 model, and 2TB of cloud storage.
Moreover, Google revealed plans to invest $1 billion over the next three years in the U.S. education sector. This funding will support AI literacy programs, research at nonprofit universities, and cloud computing infrastructure, reinforcing Google’s commitment to empowering educational institutions amid the accelerating transformation driven by AI technologies.
