Google has expanded the language capabilities of its AI-powered note-taking service, NotebookLM, by adding voice summarization support for over 50 languages. Following the introduction of an interactive mode, the company has now announced the upcoming release of a standalone app, set to launch on May 20, enabling users to access the service with greater ease.
The standalone application will be available for both Android and iOS platforms, with its initial rollout coinciding with the opening day of Google I/O 2025. In the meantime, users are invited to register in advance for early access.
The app version will retain the full feature set of the web-based platform, allowing users to upload content such as web URLs, YouTube videos, and documents. With the aid of Gemini AI technology, the app can synthesize and analyze this information, generate voice summaries, and even respond to user inquiries about the reports it creates.
In a previous update, NotebookLM broadened its language support to include over 50 major languages—such as Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, German, French, Arabic, and Korean—making it easier for global users to consolidate document content and convert it into spoken dialogue for discussion. This not only allows users to “read” through listening but also provides an avenue for generating podcast-style content.
Additionally, Google has introduced an interactive mode in beta within the voice summary feature, where an AI-generated “host” can proactively answer user questions or pose follow-up queries of its own.
