Google has confirmed that a subset of Google Pixel 7a devices is affected by unexpected battery swelling issues. In response, the company has launched an extended repair program across more than 40 countries and regions, offering affected consumers free battery replacements to address swelling and diminished battery life.
As early as December 2024, users began reporting significant battery swelling and noticeable declines in battery endurance. One Reddit user, Eszence08, initially contacted Google’s customer service but was unable to obtain a satisfactory resolution. It was only after posting about the issue on Reddit, attracting broader public attention, that Google responded by offering free battery replacements. The user remarked that posting online proved far more effective than contacting Google’s customer support directly.
While it is true that lithium batteries may occasionally experience swelling after prolonged use, continued swelling can cause visible symptoms such as an increased device thickness, a bulging back cover, noticeable gaps along the edges, and significant reductions in battery life.
Battery swelling also poses potential safety risks: as the swelling worsens over time, continued charging may eventually lead to battery rupture or fire. Consequently, any device exhibiting battery swelling should be promptly repaired, and continued use should be strictly avoided.
For affected Pixel 7a devices, Google requires users to first visit an eligibility verification page, which guides them through confirming whether their device qualifies for service. Eligible users are then directed to authorized service personnel for inspection and, if approved, a free battery replacement.
In cases where the Pixel 7a also suffers from unrelated damage — such as water ingress or screen fractures — Google’s repair policy stipulates that users must address all damages together. A repair quote will be provided, and users will not be permitted to replace the battery alone without addressing other defects. Users are advised to schedule an appointment and discuss their options with Google’s service representatives.
Google does not offer authorized repair centers or mail-in repair services in every market. In such cases, alternative compensation options are available: if the Pixel 7a is out of warranty, users may apply for a $200 refund or request a $300 Google Store credit voucher to purchase a new Pixel device. For Pixel 7a units still under warranty, users may be eligible for a refund of up to $456.
