At present, U.S. antitrust regulators are pressuring Google to divest its Chrome browser as a remedy for its search monopoly—a move that would constitute a monumental setback for the company, which is therefore striving to avert such an outcome at all costs.
Whether Chrome will ultimately be sold remains uncertain, yet this has not deterred certain companies from preparing acquisition bids. One notable contender is the AI search firm Perplexity AI, which has reportedly extended a forward offer of $34.5 billion to Google.
Perplexity AI, currently valued at $18 billion, is said to have assembled this bid in partnership with other investment institutions. Chrome, with approximately 3.5 billion users worldwide and a long-standing hold on more than 60% of the desktop browser market, is estimated to be worth between $20 billion and $50 billion, depending on the buyer’s valuation metrics.
Recently, Perplexity AI launched Comet, an AI-powered browser built on Chromium, underscoring the company’s keen interest in the browser space. Rumors of its ambition to acquire Chrome have been circulating for some time.
In addition to Perplexity AI, OpenAI has also been rumored to harbor interest in purchasing Chrome, and it is likely that other technology players are poised to make similar moves should U.S. regulators compel Google to sell.
Nonetheless, barring regulatory compulsion, Google is highly unlikely to relinquish Chrome. The browser serves as a critical gateway to Google Search and other core services, and its sale would almost certainly precipitate a substantial decline in Google’s search market share.
