OpenAI recently confirmed on its technical support site that the GPT-4 model will officially be retired from the ChatGPT service by the end of April this year, to be succeeded by GPT-4o. However, developers will still be able to access GPT-4 resources via API.
Originally launched in March 2023 as the successor to GPT-3.5, GPT-4 lacked the multimodal capabilities introduced with GPT-4o in May 2024, rendering it comparatively less efficient in performance.
GPT-4o, by contrast, supports over 50 languages and surpasses GPT-4 in areas such as content creation, code generation, and STEM-related cognitive tasks. Its multimodal capabilities enable simultaneous processing of text, audio, and images, allowing it to generate more nuanced and richly detailed content.
Reports suggest that OpenAI is preparing to unveil a new series of AI models, potentially branded as GPT-4.1, with smaller-scale variants such as GPT-4.1 mini and nano also in development. These are expected to deliver faster and more efficient performance. Additionally, the launch of a new o3 series inference model—or even an o4-mini variant—is anticipated, aimed at competing with lightweight inference models from rivals like DeepSeek and Google.
