OpenAI has announced the release of GPT-5.1, a major revision within the GPT-5 generation, designed not only to make ChatGPT more intelligent but also more human in its conversational style. The company emphasizes that GPT-5.1 brings meaningful improvements in both reasoning ability and communicative nuance through two new models—GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking.
Each of the two core models introduced in this update serves a distinct purpose:
- GPT-5.1 Instant: As the most widely used model within ChatGPT, the new Instant adopts a warmer, more conversational tone, preserving its practicality while adding a hint of playfulness.
More importantly, it introduces adaptive reasoning for the first time—a mechanism that enables the model to determine when deeper, slower thinking is necessary to address more challenging tasks. According to OpenAI, this enhancement has yielded significant gains in the AIME 2025 mathematics competition and Codeforces programming evaluations. - GPT-5.1 Thinking: This is OpenAI’s advanced reasoning model, now more precise in allocating thinking time—responding swiftly to simple tasks while sustaining more deliberate analysis for complex problems. Its output also contains fewer dense technical terms, making intricate concepts more accessible to users.
Beyond the improvements in intelligence, OpenAI has also expanded ChatGPT’s personalization options with a suite of more intuitive style controls:
- New preset styles: In addition to the existing Default, Friendly, and Efficient modes, three new tones have been introduced—Professional, Candid, and Quirky.
- Experimental fine-tuning: Selected users will gain the ability to adjust the brevity, enthusiasm, scannability, and emoji frequency of responses with greater granularity.
- Instant application: All changes now take effect immediately across all conversations—including ongoing threads—without requiring a fresh chat.
OpenAI states that GPT-5.1 Instant and Thinking will begin rolling out to all users starting November 12. Paid subscribers—including Pro, Plus, Go, and Business—will receive priority access, while Enterprise and Education customers will enjoy a seven-day early-access period.
Once deployment concludes, GPT-5.1 will become ChatGPT’s new default model. To ensure a smooth transition, the original GPT-5 models (both Instant and Thinking) will remain available in the legacy model list for paying subscribers for an additional three months. As for API support, developers can expect availability later this week.
