Previously, the xAI Grok 4 model was available only to users with a paid SuperGrok subscription. Now, Elon Musk has announced that Grok 4 is being opened to all users, with free users also able to access the model—albeit limited to five queries per 12 hours.
To enhance usability, the Grok app has been updated to allow manual selection of different models. xAI recommends using the automatic mode, in which complex queries are analyzed with Grok 4, while simpler ones are handled by the existing Grok 3 model—preserving the limited Grok 4 daily quota.
Users may also opt for Grok 4 in “Expert Mode,” where all queries are processed by Grok 4. However, for free users, the five-query daily limit can be quickly exhausted, after which they must either wait until the next day to resume use or subscribe to SuperGrok for $30 per month.
Grok 4 also offers a “Heavy” mode capable of tackling even more complex problems, though this option remains exclusive to SuperGrok subscribers and is not yet available to free users.
The switching method varies by platform: Grok integrated into X/Twitter lacks an automatic mode, requiring users to manually toggle between Grok 3 and Grok 4, while the Grok app supports automatic selection. Regardless of platform, the free-user quota for Grok 4 remains the same—no more than five queries per day.
This free access initiative appears to be part of Elon Musk’s strategy to entice new subscribers. If users find during the trial period that Grok 4 significantly outperforms Grok 3 and reliably meets their needs, it could encourage many to upgrade to a SuperGrok membership.
