Numerous reports have begun to surface on Apple’s official forums and other online communities regarding intermittent Wi-Fi disconnections affecting the iPhone 17 lineup, including the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
According to affected users, Wi-Fi briefly disconnects and then automatically reconnects immediately after unlocking the iPhone. Since Apple’s CarPlay system relies on Wi-Fi, this issue may also cause CarPlay sessions to drop unexpectedly.
Many Apple Watch owners have further noted that unlocking the smartwatch can also trigger Wi-Fi interruptions on their iPhones, though it remains unclear whether the Apple Watch itself is the root cause of the disruption.
The entire iPhone 17 series employs Apple’s in-house N1 networking chip, replacing the Broadcom wireless chips that Apple had used for years. The N1 chip handles Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread connectivity, with Apple touting it as offering deeper integration and enhanced compatibility across its ecosystem.
Typically, such issues are resolved via software updates, but it is not yet known whether Apple is aware of the bug or when a fix might be delivered, leaving iPhone 17 owners to wait for a resolution.
It is worth noting that Arun Mathias, Apple’s Vice President of Wireless Software Technologies, recently highlighted the energy efficiency of the N1 chip in an interview with CNBC:
“One of the things people may not realize is that your Wi-Fi access points actually contribute to your device’s awareness of location, so you don’t need to use GPS, which actually costs more from a power perspective. By being able to do this more seamlessly in the background, not needing to wake up the application processor as much, we can do that significantly more efficiently.”
