Iran has currently severed all access to the international internet due to internal domestic unrest. Observational data indicates that, as of this writing, a nationwide blackout of global connectivity has persisted for 24 consecutive hours, with even certain landline telecommunications infrastructures suffering disruptions. However, beginning at 15:05 local time on January 9 (11:35 UTC), a negligible surge of traffic was detected emanating from autonomous systems (ASNs) belonging to a select few Iranian academic institutions. Given the limited number of these universities and their sparse user base relative to the national population, the resulting international traffic constitutes a mere 0.01% of Iran’s customary volume.
Analysis of this data suggests that the restoration of connectivity to these specific academic ASNs may have been a transient trial. For instance, AS29068 (University of Tehran) witnessed a resumption of valid traffic at 11:35, only for connectivity to plummet back to zero by 15:15, signaling a renewed disconnection. Similar patterns were observed in AS12660 (Sharif University of Technology), AS43965 (Tehran University of Medical Sciences), and AS57745 (Tarbiat Modares University), where the temporal trends were identical, implying a meticulously orchestrated test. Internet monitors speculate that these fluctuations indicate a strategic assessment of “whitelisting” specific connection types—perhaps prioritizing core educational backbones and research laboratories—or potentially restricting global access to a limited elite of institutions and organizations in the future.
Tehran, the nation’s capital, accounted for the lion’s share of this activity at 49.6%. While universities in other regions were likely granted brief windows of connectivity, the high concentration of academic centers in Tehran resulted in the city producing the most significant portion of the recorded traffic.
To date, Iranian authorities have remained silent regarding the internet hiatus, and the timeline for a full restoration remains shrouded in uncertainty. Nonetheless, such a comprehensive severance of global ties will inevitably exert a deleterious influence on the nation’s economic vitality. It should be noted that while international visibility is lost, a massive domestic intranet likely remains operational, ensuring that vital governmental bodies and financial institutions can maintain internal communications.
