With every major iOS release, some users inevitably notice a decline in battery life or reduced endurance. Anticipating these concerns, Apple has issued a support document in advance to reassure users that such effects are both temporary and expected, not signs of underlying issues caused by the update.
Large iOS updates often trigger a surge of both background and foreground processes. Even when users return to the Home Screen, the system continues to perform resource-intensive tasks—such as data indexing, downloading supplementary assets, and updating applications.
During this period, users may observe sluggish performance, diminished battery reserves, or even elevated device temperatures that make the iPhone feel uncomfortably warm. Apple notes that these symptoms are transient and resolve once the update process is fully completed.
The company also acknowledges that some of the new features introduced in iOS 26 may, in certain cases, consume more power. However, Apple emphasizes that any long-term impact on battery life or performance should be minimal, though actual results will depend on individual usage patterns and the apps in play.
From Apple’s official documentation:
Apple’s hardware and software are designed together to deliver great performance and great battery life. As new features and improvements are added, they can change the way we use our devices, as you explore and utilize these new capabilities. Here are some important things to keep in mind:
Immediately after completing an update, particularly a major release, you might notice a temporary impact on battery life and thermal performance. This is normal, as your device needs time to complete the setup process in the background, including indexing data and files for search, downloading new assets, and updating apps.
New features are exciting and help you get even more out of your Apple product, though some may require additional resources from the device. Depending on individual usage, some users may notice a small impact on performance and/or battery life. Apple continually works to optimize these features in software updates to ensure great battery life and a smooth user experience.
As the stable release of iOS 26 has only just arrived, Apple also reminds users that those concerned about potential performance or battery implications can choose to delay updating. The company continues to allow devices to remain on iOS 18.x, giving users the option to upgrade once iOS 26 has matured and stabilized.
