Microsoft Ships KB5121767 Out-of-Band Update to Fix a Dell USB-C Compatibility Fault

Last week, Microsoft released its routine July 2026 security update. However, the update was found to clash with the Intel USB-C driver on Dell devices. This compatibility fault could trigger unexpected shutdowns, degraded performance, overheating, and excessively rapid battery drain on affected machines. In response, Microsoft moved swiftly to block the update in the cloud for the impacted Dell devices. Now, a corrected version has arrived.
An Out-of-Band Update Replaces the Original
Microsoft’s original update carried the number KB5101650. To resolve the compatibility fault, the company has issued an emergency out-of-band update, KB5121767, to replace it. This new out-of-band update pushes only to affected devices. Other, unaffected devices need not install it, since the substance of the update differs little.
In its support documentation, Microsoft explains the situation. Some Dell devices had temporarily been unable to receive the KB5101650 security update because of the fault. Those devices can now install this out-of-band (OOB) update. Microsoft recommends the update solely for affected machines. Unaffected devices do not need it, so users need not visit the update page and repeatedly click to check for updates.
Some of the Affected Devices
The impacted models include the Dell Pro Max 14 Premium MA14250, the Dell Pro Max 16 Premium MA16250, the Dell Pro Precision 7 14 PW714260, and the Dell Pro Precision 7 16 PW716260. They also include the Dell Precision 5470, 5480, 5490, and 5770, along with the Dell XPS 17 9720 and the Dell XPS 17 9730.
