BitLocker recovery screen
A frustrating issue that has surfaced before has once again reappeared. According to Microsoft’s latest support documentation, some users are finding their systems automatically booting into Microsoft BitLocker Recovery Mode after installing the newest Windows 10/11 security updates and restarting their devices.
Microsoft states that the problem affects Windows 10 version 22H2, Windows 11 version 24H2, and Windows 11 version 25H2. The impacted devices are primarily Intel-based computers that support Modern Standby, a low-power state that allows background tasks to continue running while the system sleeps. This feature enables instant wake-up, continuous network connectivity, and real-time data synchronization and notifications.
Ordinarily, Modern Standby should not interfere with BitLocker Recovery Mode, which is only triggered when hardware changes occur — such as modifications to the TPM, firmware, or other system components. In such cases, users must enter their BitLocker recovery key to decrypt secured data.
The good news is that if you’ve logged into your Microsoft account, your recovery key should be safely stored in your account settings. Simply sign in on your phone, retrieve the key, and enter it to decrypt the drive and regain access to your desktop.
The bad news, however, is that if you lack the recovery key for any reason, the data on your drive will be irretrievably lost. Seeing the BitLocker recovery screen means that your C drive is encrypted, and whether other partitions are also encrypted depends on your system configuration.
Microsoft is currently working to resolve the issue, attempting to roll back certain updates using KIR (Known Issue Rollback) technology to prevent further occurrences. Unfortunately, users already affected will still need to supply their recovery key to decrypt their data.
Complaints about BitLocker and device encryption have grown increasingly common. Some users argue that Microsoft’s default encryption settings pose a greater threat to data security than external attacks, as encryption-related complications have led many to lose access to their own data permanently.
