In March of this year, Apple formally announced the discontinuation of the Mac Pro. The company removed the product from its official website and confirmed it has no plans to release any successor hardware. With that, a flagship desktop that once symbolized Apple’s pinnacle of computing power officially passed into history. Yet according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, writing in his “Power On” column, axing the Mac Pro line outright was never Apple’s original intention. Internally, the company had even secretly developed a surprising new Intel version.
The Stillborn “Extreme” Chip Project
Gurman notes that abandoning the Mac Pro was not what Apple set out to do. The rumor mill had long speculated that Apple intended to stack an even more fearsome “Extreme”-class chip atop the “Ultra” tier of its Apple Silicon range, purpose-built to supply firepower for the Mac Pro.
The report confirms that speculation. As Gurman understands it, Apple did indeed begin developing M2 Extreme and M3 Extreme chips. Ultimately, however, it terminated those projects, weighing the enormous development costs against the sharply limited market demand for such top-tier machines.
Two Mac Pros That Never Saw Daylight: J170 and J190
Alongside the chip work, Gurman also revealed two Mac Pro hardware models that Apple secretly developed internally but never released.
Codename J170: A Brand-New Intel Mac Pro
This is the most startling detail in the entire disclosure. Even as Apple was aggressively driving its transition to in-house Apple Silicon, it nonetheless developed a new Mac Pro powered by an Intel processor. The goal, reportedly, was to satisfy certain specific use cases.
Codename J190: An M3 Ultra Mac Pro
This Mac Pro was originally slated to carry the M3 Ultra chip. Apple’s initial plan called for it to launch in early 2025, alongside the M3 Ultra version of the Mac Studio.
As these plans collapsed entirely, Apple finally settled on discontinuing the Mac Pro in March and steering all professional purchasing demand toward the Mac Studio. Gurman is candid, too: he does not believe Apple will revive the Mac Pro line any time soon, if ever. Meanwhile, the Mac Studio, its full-fledged successor, could receive a new upgrade with the M5 Ultra chip as early as this autumn.
Apple Silicon’s Closed Architecture Sealed the Mac Pro’s Fate
The demise of the Mac Pro line stems not from insufficient power, but from an irreconcilable tension between Apple Silicon’s unified architecture and the modular demands of a traditional professional workstation.
The soul of the Mac Pro’s classic “cheese grater” chassis lay in its unrivaled expandability. It let Hollywood visual-effects houses and elite recording studios freely insert and remove high-end PCIe graphics cards, hardware codec cards, or professional audio cards. That is precisely why Apple would secretly develop the J170 Intel Mac Pro: a tiny minority of top-tier professional audiovisual add-on hardware still depends heavily on the x86 architecture and traditional PCIe channels.
However, Apple Silicon’s greatest strength lies in packaging the CPU, GPU, and unified memory (UMA) onto a single SoC, trading modularity for exceptional efficiency and bandwidth. Within this closed, highly integrated architecture, the Mac Pro’s enormous chassis becomes a hollow shell, because it simply cannot accommodate third-party graphics cards or memory the way it once did.
When a compact Mac Studio can deliver more computing power and richer I/O than the old flagship Intel Mac Pro through an Ultra-class chip, it already meets the needs of up to 99% of professional users. Consequently, the Mac Pro’s graceful retirement is an inevitable result of Apple’s pursuit of ultimate efficiency on its custom-silicon path. Even so, it leaves the hardcore enthusiasts who believe in limitless hardware expansion mourning the end of an era.
