Following the implementation of the all-aluminum unibody architecture for the iPhone 17 Pro series—and the subsequent captivation of consumers with the vibrant “Cosmic Orange” palette—Apple appears increasingly emboldened in its chromatic explorations for high-tier hardware. According to nascent reports, the iPhone 18 Pro, though still months from its anticipated debut, is currently undergoing evaluations for a sophisticated new “Deep Red” finish.
Since the release of the iPhone 14 in 2022, the crimson spectrum has been conspicuously absent from Apple’s repertoire, particularly within the traditionally somber and understated “Pro” flagship lineage. However, this lingering disappointment among enthusiasts may soon be rectified. Writing in his latest “Power On” dispatch, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that Apple is rigorously testing a “Deep Red” hue as the signature centerpiece for the next generation. This shift is facilitated by the transition to aluminum unibody construction introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro, a material choice that affords significantly greater artistic flexibility in the anodization process compared to the legacy of stainless steel or titanium.
Gurman notes that the commercial triumph of Cosmic Orange—particularly its resonance within the Chinese market—has prompted Apple to consider retaining that hue alongside the newly proposed Deep Red. Nevertheless, he concedes that because red and orange occupy adjacent positions on the color wheel, the final curation of the lineup remains to be seen. Regarding rumors of “Coffee Brown” or “Purple” variants, Gurman clarified that these are likely mere tonal permutations encountered during the iterative testing of the singular “Red” concept rather than distinct offerings.
In stark contrast to the experimental vibrancy of the Pro series, Apple’s inaugural foldable device, the iPhone Fold, is expected to eschew such flamboyant aesthetics. Gurman posits that the device will be restricted to a conservative, foundational palette:
- Dark Gray or Black
- White or Light Silver
This measured approach mirrors the strategy employed during the 2017 debut of the iPhone X, which was limited to just two classic options to mitigate manufacturing complexities and inventory pressures. Historically, the Pro series has been defined by professional restraint, utilizing cool or desaturated tones such as Space Black, Silver, or Pacific Blue. However, as material science evolves and market appetites shift toward high-visibility, warmer tones, Apple is acknowledging a newfound reality: elite users also desire a degree of visual ostentation.
The potential arrival of a Deep Red iPhone 18 Pro would signify a liberation of Apple’s flagship design philosophy. Meanwhile, the binary color selection for the iPhone Fold represents the quintessential “Version 1” experimental ethos—prioritizing mechanical integrity and hinge reliability, while reserving aesthetic flourishes for future generations.
