Following the integration of Meta AI features into Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, Meta is now intensifying efforts to enhance the interactive capabilities of its AI chatbot offerings.
According to a report by Business Insider, Meta is currently testing a new feature that allows its AI chatbot to initiate conversations proactively. Based on a user’s prior interactions, the AI can send greetings or suggestions even before the user engages—aiming to deepen user engagement and increase interaction frequency.
Internally dubbed “Project Omni,” this feature is now undergoing testing via Meta’s open AI Studio platform.
AI Studio is a tool provided by Meta that enables users and brands to create customized AI chatbots without any coding experience. Users can freely define the bot’s persona, training data, and preferred Meta platform for deployment. Meta encourages users to view these AI agents as extensions of themselves—virtual avatars endowed with distinctive personalities and areas of expertise.
As a showcase, Meta has introduced a character named “The Movie Maestro,” which might send proactive messages such as: “Hope you’re having a great day! Discovered any new soundtracks or composers lately? Or would you like a movie night recommendation?” This friendly tone aims to create a conversational atmosphere akin to that of a close companion.
Meta’s ambitions, however, extend beyond mere entertainment. By making AI interactions more engaging, the company hopes to increase user retention and boost revenues from its generative AI services. Meta projects that its generative AI initiatives alone could yield between $2 billion and $3 billion in revenue this year, with an anticipated market valuation for its AI ventures reaching up to $1.4 trillion by 2035.
Nevertheless, the concept of AI initiating unsolicited messages has raised concerns regarding user privacy and autonomy. Meta has clarified that the feature remains in the testing phase and will adhere to strict guidelines: messages will only be sent to users who have previously engaged with the AI, and if the initial outreach is ignored, no further messages will follow.
Furthermore, Meta has emphasized that any proactive communication must align with the AI’s designated character profile and maintain a positive tone, steering clear of sensitive or controversial topics—unless first introduced by the user.
