Microsoft Edge is built upon the Chromium framework, yet it also incorporates a number of proprietary features developed exclusively by Microsoft—among them the Network Console Tool, designed specifically for developers.
This tool is primarily used for capturing and analyzing network requests, granting developers deeper visibility into the communication between the browser and servers, thereby enabling them to debug and optimize network traffic. Most importantly, it allows developers to edit and resend requests in order to test server responses—modifying request URLs, headers, or payloads to observe the effects of different parameters.
Regrettably, on July 24, Microsoft announced that beginning with Edge version 143, the Network Console Tool will be removed entirely. The stated reason is Microsoft’s inability to continue maintaining the feature, with the company now prioritizing stability and closer compatibility with Chrome.
What remains unclear is what Microsoft truly means by inability to maintain. Could the company’s recent wave of layoffs have affected the Edge development team? Or perhaps the existing team is now stretched too thin, unable to allocate resources, and thus compelled to abandon features with limited adoption.
The Network Console Tool was a distinctive feature of Microsoft Edge, though its niche appeal meant it was used only by developers—resulting in relatively low overall adoption. This, too, may have factored into Microsoft’s decision to discontinue support.
As an alternative, Microsoft recommends that developers turn to the REST Client extension in Visual Studio Code for API development and testing. Edge itself, however, will no longer offer a direct replacement.
