On September 2, OpenAI announced the $1.1 billion acquisition of Statsig, a company specializing in A/B testing and product analytics, while simultaneously initiating a major organizational restructuring — underscoring the central role of applications in its future strategy.
Just weeks after joining OpenAI from Instacart on August 18 as CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo has already begun sweeping personnel changes. She emphasized that the applications division will be the driving force behind the growth of ChatGPT and Codex, necessitating a more agile and focused organizational framework.
Under the new structure, Statsig founder Vijaye Raji will assume the role of CTO of Applications, overseeing core product development. Meanwhile, Srinivas Narayanan, formerly head of engineering, has been promoted to the newly created position of CTO of B2B Applications, tasked with expanding into enterprise and government markets.
Kevin Weil, previously Chief Product Officer, has been reassigned to OpenAI’s research division as VP of Scientific AI, where he will collaborate with Chief Scientist Mark Chen to advance foundational technologies. The product team will now report directly to Fidji Simo, signaling a clearer division between OpenAI’s research and applications layers — with each serving as a complement to the other.
Statsig has long been recognized for its product experimentation platform, enabling enterprises to validate new features and optimize decisions through large-scale A/B testing and data-driven insights. Integrated into OpenAI, these capabilities will strengthen application services with more precise analytics, enhancing the tuning and performance of products like ChatGPT and Codex.
OpenAI noted that while the Statsig team will merge into the company, it will continue operating independently out of its Seattle office during a phased integration process, ensuring uninterrupted service for existing customers. The acquisition remains subject to regulatory approval.
This move represents far more than a simple technology purchase — it marks a strategic elevation of OpenAI’s application ecosystem. From executive reshuffling to expanded teams, OpenAI is positioning itself to advance simultaneously in both B2C and B2B markets. Statsig’s expertise will accelerate consumer-facing product iterations, while Narayanan’s new division will focus on customized solutions for enterprise and government clients.
For OpenAI, the competition in generative AI is no longer solely about the models themselves, but about delivering faster, safer, and more context-aware services. The arrival of Fidji Simo signals that OpenAI’s applications business has entered a decisive “accelerator mode.”
