Back in February, OpenAI unveiled its roadmap for future AI models, stating at the time that GPT-4.5 would be the company’s final non-reasoning-chain model. GPT-5, according to OpenAI, was intended to integrate both non-chain-of-thought architecture and advanced reasoning models like o3. To simplify the user experience, OpenAI also announced that models such as o3 would not be released as standalone versions.
However, the company has since revised its release strategy. The much-anticipated GPT-5 has been delayed, with no definitive timeline currently available. OpenAI now plans to release the GPT-o3 and o4-mini models in the coming weeks, with GPT-5 expected to follow “in a few months.”
While GPT-o3-mini debuted in February, the full GPT-o3 model had yet to be released. Under the updated plan, OpenAI will introduce GPT-o3 as a standalone model. Sam Altman has indicated that GPT-o3 will undergo significant enhancements, including a professional mode that leverages greater computational resources to tackle the most complex queries with precision.
The reasons behind the shift in strategy remain unclear. It is possible that GPT-5 is not yet production-ready, or that mounting competitive pressure has compelled OpenAI to delay its flagship model in order to ensure it surpasses rivals in capability and performance.
Another notable aspect of the updated plan is that GPT-5 will feature a streamlined model naming system to reduce cognitive load for users. Free-tier users will be assigned a standard-intelligence model, ChatGPT Plus subscribers will receive enhanced intelligence, and ChatGPT Pro users will access the most advanced intelligence tier.
The benefit of this approach lies in its simplicity—users are no longer required to manually select between models or understand their nuanced differences. The drawback, however, is that even informed free users who understand the trade-offs between models will be confined to the standard intelligence version under GPT-5.
