Following in the footsteps of Microsoft and Nintendo, who have long offered parental control features on their gaming consoles, Sony has now introduced the PlayStation Family App, a dedicated mobile solution that enables parents to more intuitively manage their children’s gaming habits and monitor activity in real time via smartphone or tablet.
At its core, the PlayStation Family App extends the parental control settings previously available only on PlayStation consoles to mobile devices. However, Sony has also added several conveniences. A guided setup process helps parents quickly complete account binding, user age ratings, and restriction settings—making the app especially approachable for those less accustomed to navigating controls directly on the console.
Once configured, parents can manage a wide range of controls directly from their phone: setting daily or weekly playtime limits, reviewing gameplay history, managing spending caps for games and applications, or activating content filters to prevent access to age-inappropriate material. The app also allows adjustments to online privacy and social features, ensuring parents maintain oversight of their children’s digital interactions.
Notably, Sony has built in real-time notifications, allowing parents to see which game their child is currently playing and instantly decide whether to approve extended playtime or unlock restricted titles. This “approve/deny in real time” mechanism is expected to become one of the most frequently used features—particularly useful in scenarios where flexibility over gaming schedules is required.
While Sony’s move is welcome, it does arrive somewhat late compared to its competitors. Microsoft launched its Xbox Family Settings App five years ago, offering comparable features, and Nintendo debuted its parental control app alongside the first-generation Nintendo Switch, winning broad acclaim from parents for its simplicity and ease of use.
Nevertheless, for PlayStation families, this app fills a long-standing gap in cross-device management. With gaming experiences increasingly spanning consoles, PCs, and mobile devices, real-time management and notification systems for younger players are more important than ever. Through the PlayStation Family App, Sony strengthens its parental safeguards within the PlayStation Network, enabling parents to manage settings without logging into the console itself—and even to intervene remotely.
Sony confirmed that the PlayStation Family App will begin a global phased rollout starting today. Parents can download it through the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, and if it does not appear immediately, Sony will also provide a direct installation link.
