Sony’s PlayStation Network experienced a widespread and prolonged outage last weekend, with disruptions seemingly beginning at 6 PM Eastern Time on Friday and only returning to normal by 7 PM on Saturday.
Following the outage, players encountered difficulties logging into their accounts, accessing the PlayStation Store, or launching games. However, not all titles were affected—some games were able to run independently of the PSN network without issue.
This disruption left a significant number of users unable to connect to PSN over the weekend. Given that Sony is not primarily a networking company, no detailed incident report has been released to clarify the cause of this large-scale service interruption.
Acknowledging the impact on players, Sony has opted to compensate all PlayStation Plus subscribers with an automatic five-day extension to their memberships. “We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience,” the Ask PlayStation account said. “All PlayStation Plus members will automatically receive an additional 5 days of service.”
However, for many subscribers, this gesture may feel underwhelming—perhaps a discount or in-game compensation would have been a more meaningful offering.
No action is required on the part of users to receive this extension; once Sony processes the adjustment, players will notice their next billing date automatically pushed back by five days.
