Recently, the Claude Code team unveiled a special initiative dedicated to the open-source community. Principal maintainers and core members of open-source projects boasting 5,000 or more stars are now eligible to claim a complimentary six-month subscription to Claude Max 20x. Throughout this period, recipients will enjoy unrestricted access to the full suite of privileges accompanying the Claude Max tier.
Naturally, reaching the 5,000-star milestone may prove challenging for less mainstream endeavors. Recognizing this, Anthropic has instituted an alternative pathway. Developers who steward projects that profoundly influence the open-source ecosystem—or those who have made substantial contributions to pivotal projects, even without holding a core title—are encouraged to submit an application for individualized review.
The Claude Max 20x subscription grants developers an exceptionally generous usage allocation. For context, a standard Claude Max subscription, typically valued at $200 per month, permits upwards of 4,000 requests every five hours, alongside the standard 200K context window.
Program Overview:
-
Capacity: Up to 10,000 complimentary subscriptions are available, though Anthropic may adjust this ceiling based on application volume.
-
Deadline: The application window closes on June 30, 2026. Submissions received prior to this date will be fully considered.
-
Allocation: Each eligible applicant is entitled to a single complimentary subscription; duplicate submissions will be disregarded.
-
Regional Restrictions: This initiative is exclusively available in supported territories and is void where prohibited or restricted by law.
Eligibility Criteria:
-
Serve as a principal maintainer or core team member of a publicly hosted repository on GitHub.
-
Represent a project that has amassed at least 5,000 GitHub stars or consistently achieves one million monthly downloads on NPM.
-
Possess merge authority (write or administrative privileges) within the specified repository.
-
Demonstrate active participation in the project’s development over the three months preceding the application.
Discretionary Consideration for Smaller Endeavors:
Should an applicant fall short of the formal prerequisites, yet maintain a project of profound significance to the open-source landscape—or contribute meaningfully to a vital dependency—they remain welcome to apply for manual evaluation.
Such projects might encompass widely adopted infrastructure libraries, essential developer utilities, or foundational packages serving as transitive dependencies for a multitude of downstream initiatives. In these instances, applicants must clearly articulate the impact and indispensable nature of their contributions.
