The well-known game ROM hacking site RHDI (domain: ROMHack.ing) recently announced that it would discontinue providing mirrored services via the Internet Archive, citing recurring account issues that disrupted normal operations.
The root cause stems from the fact that ROM hacking tools are frequently flagged as malicious by security software. As a result, the mirrors uploaded by RHDI to the Internet Archive were often detected as containing viruses, leading to the account being flagged as a spam source and subsequently banned.
Owing to these difficulties, RHDI has chosen to abandon the Internet Archive as a distribution channel altogether. This means that users can now only obtain files directly from RHDI’s own servers—a development that may disappoint data preservation enthusiasts, since the Internet Archive’s mirrors offered long-term storage of all versions without deletion.
This challenge is hardly unique to RHDI. Many ROM hacking websites face similar obstacles: once tools are falsely flagged as malware, Google Safe Browsing intervenes and blocks access, preventing users from opening the sites in browsers such as Chrome and Safari.
With the assistance of Internet Archive team member Jason Scott, RHDI has since restored its mirrors. However, instead of daily uploads, the site will now update its data weekly or monthly, which introduces a slight delay in availability.
It is also important to note that RHDI only provides patches and patching tools, not the ROMs themselves, a policy designed to sidestep certain copyright disputes. Users must still obtain the original ROMs through other websites or sources.
