Microsoft has now confirmed that support for Windows 11 SE will be discontinued at the end of 2026. This operating system, developed as a successor to Windows 10 S mode, was designed primarily for the education sector, with a focus on supporting students.
Windows 11 SE imposes numerous restrictions intended to prevent malware infections and discourage access to non-educational content. For example, without approval from an IT administrator, the system blocks the execution of any executable files (.exe). When Microsoft first introduced Windows 11 SE in 2021, and later in 2022, the company portrayed it as the dawn of a new era for personal computing—offering schools with limited budgets a simple, secure, and cost-effective solution, including a streamlined, cloud-first experience meant to address the shortcomings of Windows 10 S mode.
Newly published support documentation indicates that Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 11 SE on October 13, 2026. After that date, the operating system will no longer receive critical security updates or bug fixes, and all associated technical support will be terminated.
For many schools that have adopted Windows 11 SE, this announcement is particularly troubling. Continuing to use the system without updates would pose significant security risks, yet replacing the operating system—or the hardware itself—will inevitably require additional funding.
Microsoft has already advised schools and IT teams to consider transitioning to hardware capable of running the standard edition of Windows 11, implicitly signaling the need to purchase new devices that can support the full version of the operating system.
As a result, schools that once placed their trust in Microsoft and invested in the Windows 11 SE ecosystem are now forced to seek new funding and alternative solutions, or to pivot entirely to other platforms, such as Apple’s iPad or Google’s Chromebook.
Devices preinstalled with Windows 11 SE typically come with only 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of eMMC storage—hardware specifications that deliver a very poor experience when running the standard version of Windows 11.
