This month, Microsoft disseminated its inaugural update of 2026 for supported products, including Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, in keeping with historical precedent, these patches frequently introduce nascent complications while remediating existing defectsβsuch as the previously documented issue wherein certain enterprise-grade devices fail to hibernate or shut down appropriately.
The most recently identified anomaly involves an inability to fully power down or authenticate during Remote Desktop sessions following the installation of the update. Ordinarily, such releases undergo rigorous preliminary testing; nevertheless, for reasons yet unascertained, Microsoft failed to identify these malfunctions during the evaluation phase.
To mitigate these disruptions, Microsoft has issued several Out-of-Band (OOB) updates. These specialized patches are not automatically delivered to the broader user base; instead, affected individuals must manually download and install them to restore functionality.
Key Remediations:
-
Remote Desktop: A definitive fix has been introduced for KB5074109 (January 2026 update), addressing authentication failures encountered during Remote Desktop logins and the subsequent inability of remote devices to shut down while connected.
-
Power Management: The update rectifies a defect wherein certain devices with Secure Boot enabled would spontaneously restart when attempting to enter hibernation or initiate a shutdown.
