The CyberAv3ngers collective gained widespread notoriety following targeted assaults on industrial control hardware. In late 2023, these IRGC-linked hackers began compromising internet-exposed Unitronics programmable logic controllers, including those operating within American water treatment facilities. The malicious actors routinely breached these vulnerable systems by exploiting default administrator credentials or utilizing devices entirely devoid of password protection.
The Unitronics Controller Campaign
A joint investigative report by American and allied cybersecurity agencies detailed these alarming intrusions. Between November 2023 and January 2024, operatives successfully compromised at least 75 Unitronics devices across the United States. At least 34 of these impacted systems operated directly within water supply and wastewater purification facilities. The hackers systematically altered controller logic, locked out remote operators, and maliciously reconfigured vital equipment parameters.

The State Department’s Rewards for Justice program now actively pursues Yaryab as a high-ranking representative of the IRGC electronic warfare command. This substantial bounty extends beyond mere information leading directly to an arrest. The United States is prepared to disburse up to 10 million dollars for intelligence that successfully identifies or locates any individual operating under foreign state direction while engaging in malicious cyber operations against American critical infrastructure.
Federal documentation lists dozens of associated individuals and front organizations linked to Yaryab. Alongside CyberAv3ngers, US authorities connect the IRGC cyber commander to Emennet Pasargad, Net Peygard Samavat Company, and various other entities that Washington formally classifies as integral components of the Iranian state-sponsored cyber espionage apparatus.
