According to Microsoft’s list of known issues updated on September 19, 2025, Windows 11 version 24H2 encounters playback failures for certain DRM-protected videos after installing the August 2025 Preview Update (KB5064081) or the September 2025 Patch Tuesday Update (KB5065426).
The problem affects some digital televisions and Blu-ray/DVD players, where users may experience copyright protection errors, frequent playback interruptions, stuttering, or even black screens. Notably, this issue does not affect DRM-enabled streaming services such as Netflix.
In addition, digital audio playback applications that rely on Enhanced Video Renderer with HDCP enforcement may also encounter the same DRM-related problems. For now, Microsoft has not provided a temporary workaround, meaning the only option available to users is to uninstall the updates in order to restore playback.
Users must remove KB5064081 and all subsequent updates, then restart the system to regain normal playback. After doing so, it is advisable to pause Windows Update to prevent the system from automatically reinstalling the problematic updates, which would otherwise cause the playback issues to reoccur.
Microsoft has stated that a fix will be released in a future update, though the exact timeline remains unspecified. The issue currently affects only Windows 11 version 24H2, but it is expected that the forthcoming version 25H2 may also be impacted.
