Microsoft now schedules major version updates for Windows 11 every October, with the upcoming release set for October 2025—namely, Windows 11 version 25H2. References to this version have already begun appearing in the Windows Insider builds.
In the recently released Windows 11 Build 27842, the AppraiserRes.dll
file includes strings associated with version 25H2. Notably, Microsoft has introduced new entries such as GE25H2
and 26200=FT_ALL_CompatIndicatorHelper_WritingGE25H2
.
The first entry appears to serve as a version check, signifying values greater than or equal to 25H2. The second entry seems to trigger a system compatibility assessment once the initial version check is completed, ensuring that the device is eligible for the 25H2 update.
It appears that Microsoft is preparing for the Windows 11 25H2 rollout, although it seems poised to be a minor update with no significant new features.
As for the version number, 26200, it is worth noting that the current stable release of Windows 11 carries the build number 26100. The minimal difference between these two builds gives rise to the foreboding impression that the 25H2 update may be a relatively minor one, offering little in terms of noteworthy advancements.
That said, Microsoft has recently shifted its strategy, choosing to deliver new features directly to the stable version of Windows 11 once testing is complete, rather than bundling them into annual updates. This approach mirrors the rolling release model adopted by certain Linux distributions, allowing users to quickly benefit from new features simply by keeping their systems updated.
Looking back, Windows 11 version 22H2 was a major update, while version 23H2 was a more modest one. Now, version 24H2 stands as a major update, suggesting that 25H2 is likely to be another minor update.
As a minor release, Microsoft is unlikely to introduce substantial changes. Beyond the updated version number, the new release will extend the system’s support lifecycle, making this update primarily a move to maintain a consistent release cadence.
