Microsoft will officially cease providing security updates for Windows 10 in October 2025. However, to ease the transition, the company has introduced the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program—offering an additional year of security updates for individual and home users, and up to three years of support for enterprise clients, extending protection through October 2028.
To align with this extended security update timeline and grant enterprise customers additional time to migrate, Microsoft has announced an extension of Microsoft 365 support for Windows 10. This move ensures that organizations can continue to use the Microsoft 365 suite securely throughout the transitional period.
Microsoft emphasized the importance of this extension, noting that many businesses are expected to shift from Windows 10 to Windows 11 during this time. Although the company strongly recommends migrating as soon as possible, it acknowledges that a variety of operational and technical challenges may require certain organizations to postpone the transition.
During this interim phase, many enterprises will likely still rely on Microsoft 365 on Windows 10. Without continued support, these users would face increased security risks, which prompted Microsoft to prolong support to safeguard business continuity.
Outlined below are the updated timelines for Microsoft 365 feature and security update support on Windows 10:
- Until August 2026: Microsoft 365 Current Channel, including all personal and home user editions.
- Until October 2026: Microsoft 365 Monthly Enterprise Channel, tailored primarily for business and institutional customers.
- Until January 2027: Microsoft 365 Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, designed for enterprise and institutional clients.
- Until October 2028: All Microsoft 365 channels will continue receiving security updates; support will be fully discontinued thereafter.
For personal and home users, gaining access to new Microsoft 365 features will require a timely upgrade to Windows 11, as the Current Channel will no longer receive feature updates beyond August 2026. That said, individual users may opt into enterprise channels to continue receiving updates temporarily.
For businesses, however, Microsoft has made it clear that October 2028 marks the definitive end of support for Microsoft 365 on Windows 10. After that point, no further security updates will be issued, meaning organizations that have not yet migrated to Windows 11 may no longer be able to use Microsoft 365 in a secure and dependable manner.
